Vintage Crochet Flower Octagon

For this pattern, I'm using the same pattern as for my Vintage Crochet Flower - but minus the picots... and plus a few more rounds so as to create a flowery octagon:

Vintage Flower Octagon Pattern

This pattern is written using USA terminology. I've written the UK equivalents you'll need at the start of each round :)

Round 1

(dc = UK tr)

Ch 5, ss into 5th ch from hook to form a ring, ch 5, 1 dc into ring.

(ch 2, 1 dc into ring) 6 times, ch 2, ss into 3rd of 5 ch to join.

Round 2

(trc = UK dtr)

Ss into 1st 2 ch space. Ch 4, 3 trc into same space.

(ch 2, 4 trc into next space) 7 times, ch 2, ss into top of 4 ch to join.

32 sts (including the 4 ch at the start) and eight 2 ch spaces.

To join a new color: tie off first color. Join new color into same 3rd of 5 ch where you finished. Draw the yarn through the chain, then continue with Round 3, slip stitching into the space below.

Two rounds completedFirst two rounds crocheted.

Round 3

(trc = UK dtr)

Ss into space between 4 ch and 1st trc, ch 4, 1 trc into same space.

2 trc into each of next 2 spaces between the trc stitches. We now have 6 stitches (including the 4 ch) sitting on top of the 3 spaces formed by the 4 trc in the round below.

(Ch 2, skip 2 ch space, 2 trc into each of the next three spaces between trc stitches) 7 times.

Ch 2, ss into top of 4 ch to join.

We now have 48 trc stitches including the 4 ch - and 8 spaces of 2 ch.

End of Round 3End of Round 3.

Round 4

(trc = UK dtr, trc5tog = UK dtr5tog)

Ss into space between 4 ch and 1st trc, ch 4.

trc5tog into the next 4 spaces between the trc of the previous round, working as follows:

1 stitch next space - remember we're crocheting all these 5 stitches together! - 2 stitches into next space, 1 stitch into next, 1 stitch next - 6 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all loops.

Ch 6, ss into 2 ch space.

*Ch 6, trc6tog into the spaces between the next set of trc working thus:

1 stitch into 1st space between 1st 2 trc, 1 stitch next space, 2 stitches next space, 1 stitch next space, 1 stitch next space - 7 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all loops.

Ch 6, ss into 2 ch space.*

Repeat from * to * 6 times.

Ch 6, skip 4 chain at start of round, ss into top of 1st trc.

To change color: tie off and weave end to the back through the same stitch you slip stitched into. Join next color into the 3rd chain of the next 6 chain loop, ch 1. Then continue with Round 5.

(sc = UK dc)

If you didn't change color, ss across to 3rd chain of next 6 chain loop and ch 1.

Now let's continue our round together!

Sc into 6 ch space just below your ss (or where you joined with a new color.)

*Ch 4, sc into next 6 chain space, ch 6, sc into next 6 chain space*

Repeat from * to * 7 times, omitting the last sc after your final 6 ch and finishing with a ss into the 1st sc at the start of the round to join.

Round 5 - chained loops around the edgeEnd of Round 5.

Ss into 1st 4 chain space.

Ch 3, 5 dc into same space.

9 trc into next 6 chain space.

(6 dc into next space, 9 trc into next space) 7 times around.

Join with a ss into top of ch 3.

We now have 120 stitches including the ch 3: 8 groups of 6 dc/9trc.

Round 6 completedEnd of Round 6.

Round 7

(sc = UK dc, dc = UK tr)

Ch 1, sc into same stitch (the top of your ch 3.)

*Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, sc into next stitch (which is into the last dc of your 6 dc below.)

Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, 3 dc next stitch (which is the center of your 9 trc below.)

Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, sc next stitch (which is the first dc of the next 6 dc below)*

Repeat from * to * 7 times, omitting the last sc and finishing with a ss into your 1st sc.

Round 7 completedEnd of Round 7.

Round 8

(sc = UK dc, dc = UK tr)

Ss into 1st ch 4 space. (Stitch mark here if you like - we will finish the round in this stitch.)

Ch 4, ss, ch 4, ss into same space.

6 sc next space; into 3 dc in center, work 1 sc into 1st dc, 3 dc into next dc, 1 sc into next dc; 6 sc into next space.

*(Ss, ch 4, ss, ch 4, ss) into next space.

6 sc into next space; 1 sc into 1st dc, 3 dc into 2nd dc, 1 sc into 3rd dc.

6 sc into next space*

Repeat from * to * 6 times. Join with a ss into your 1st ss.
