Flowery Cosmic Coaster Zig Zag Edging

A lacy zig zag edging worked in 5 rounds turns your Flowery Cosmic Coaster into something quite different!

Here's the original pattern:

Original Flowery Cosmic Coaster

And now with the zig zag edging:

Edged Coaster

These pieces are worked in size 10 thread with a 1.75 mm hook.

The zig zag coaster measures 4 1/4 inches, 11 cm across.

The original pattern is too small as a coaster when worked in thread, although it makes a very pretty decorative piece!

Pattern for Zig Zag Edging

Work all 6 rounds of the Flowery Cosmic Coaster.

I tied off at the end of that pattern and joined in a new color for the edging.

Stitches

sc = UK dc

Round 7: in this round we work into each of the 8 stitches of every petal, making a 3-ch loop in the middle as we go!

Join yarn into the top of the 3 ch where you just joined at the end of Round 6. I start with a slip knot and pull the loop through.

Ch 1.

1 sc into same stitch where you just joined; 1 sc into each of next 3 stitches. That second stitch is pulled pretty tight due to joining in, so take care to spot it!

Ch 3, 1 sc into each of next 4 stitches. First petal worked.

For each of the remaining 11 petals work 1 sc into 1st 4 stitches, ch 3, 1 sc next 4 stitches.

Join with a ss into 1st sc.

Round 8: now we chain up one side of the petal and add a 3-ch loop at the top before chaining down the other side.

Ch 1, sc into same stitch where you joined.

*Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop.

Ch 3; skip next 3 stitches, 1 sc into each of next 2 stitches* (these 2 stitches are the last stitch of this petal and the first stitch of the next.)

Repeat from * to * 10 times so that you have worked 11 petals.

Last petal: Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop; ch 3, skip next 3 stitches; 1 sc into next stitch, ss into 1st sc.

End of Round 8End of Round 8

~~~~~
Round 9: in this round we skip the 3 chain on either side of the petal; we only work into the 3-ch loop at the top and the sc stitches positioned between the petals.
Ch 1, sc into same stitch where you joined.
*Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop at top of petal.
Ch 3; skip 3 ch down side of petal, 1 sc into each of next 2 sc*
Repeat 10 times so that you've worked 11 petals.
Last petal: Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop.
Ch 3; sc into next stitch, ss into 1st stitch to join.
End of Round 9End of Round 9
~~~~~

Round 10: almost the same as Round 9, except that we work a 4-ch loop at the top of the petal!

Ch 1, sc into same stitch where you joined.

*Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 4, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop at top of petal.

Ch 3; skip 3 ch down side of petal, 1 sc into each of next 2 sc*

Repeat 10 times so that you've worked 11 petals.

Last petal: Ch 3; (1 sc, ch 4, 1 sc) into 3-ch loop.

Ch 3; skip 3 ch down side of petal, 1 sc into next stitch, ss into 1st stitch of round to join.

End of Round 10End of Round 10

~~~~~
Round 11: In this round we also skip the 3 ch on either side of the petal.
Ch 1, sc into same stitch where you joined.
*Ch 3; (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) into 4-ch loop at the top.
Ch 3; skip 3 ch down side of petal, 1 sc into each of next 2 stitches.*
Repeat 10 times to work a total of 11 petals.
Last petal: Ch 3; (2 sc, 3 ch, 2 sc) into 4-ch loop.
Ch 3; skip 3 ch down side of petal, 1 sc into next stitch, join with a ss into 1st stitch.
